(Cornus mas)

Cornelian Cherry seeds harvested late August 2022. Cornelian cherries aren’t an actual cherry, but the fruit of a species of Dogwood tree. The trees grow to around 15’ tall by 15’ wide, can fruit in the shade, and can live a very long time. It’s important to let the fruits fully ripen before eating, as the underripe fruits are astringent. A popular fruit in Eastern Europe used for preserves, wines, juice, dried, and eaten fresh. Often planted as an ornamental in the US due to its beautiful foliage, yellow spring flowers and beautiful red fruits. Fruits are high in Vitamin C and pectin. Cornelian Cherry trees are hardy to -25F and don’t have pest and disease issues like true cultivated cherry trees. A popular permaculture plant.

Seeds will be shipped in damp peat and require cold stratification. For best germination, we recommend to sow the seeds late Summer/early Fall outside 1/2 inch deep directly in well drained soil and mulched. The other option is to store them in the damp peat in your refrigerator for 5 months (over winter) before planting out. It’s important that the seeds don’t dry out in storage which is why Fall planting is an easier approach. Some seeds may take 2 years to germinate.
