Currants and Jostaberry
(Ribes spp.)
Currants are an easy to grow, nutritious berry that can fruit even in somewhat shaded conditions (black currants handle shade better than red, or white). This makes them a great option for tree guilds. Currants are a popular fruit in Europe, slowly gaining popularity in the US. The leaves make a pleasant tea too. Easy to grow, and being very high in Vitamin C makes them a great low maintenance addition to any garden or food forest! Black currants being the most nutrient dense of all the currants, containing high amounts of anthocyanins. Plants grow to around 5’ x 5’. Black currants are partially self pollinating but do best with another variety around. Red and Pink currants are mostly self pollinating.
