Common Milkweed
Asclepias syriaca
Common milkweed is known to be a great food for monarch butterflies. It’s also a great food for humans and has been for a long time. By growing milkweed, we can help support monarchs and feed ourselves too. Milkweed provides many foods throughout the growing season. Starting with shoots (that taste similar to green beans) in the spring, then flower buds in summer, then open flowers, and finally the young seed pods. All of these being delicious vegetables when boiled and topped with butter/oil and salt. We always leave many flowers and seed pods to form and mature for insects, as well as seed dispersal. Milkweed is a reliable vegetable to grow and we highly recommend it!
Zone 3 hardy.
Sold as bare root divisions.
